Biodiversity conservation in schools (book)

Biodiversity conservation in schools (book)

General Objective:

Location: Quito, Ecuador

A. Disseminate to the youth of Ecuador the life and work of one of the most important referents of biodiversity conservation in Ecuador, the scientist Fernando Ortiz Crespo.

B. To encourage young Ecuadorians to observe and study Ecuadorian nature as one of the alternatives for personal growth and professional development.

Specific objective:

The Nahuel Foundation maintains permanent communication with grassroots organizations (Parish Councils and educational sector) in the areas where its projects are implemented.

For this reason, the main beneficiaries of this publication will be the young people in schools in the places where Nahuel has promoted projects with the concept of healthy schools.

This allows complementing and reinforcing the educational actions that the foundation carries out in schools.

Project Description:

To support the dissemination of biodiversity conservation in schools with the publication of the book by Fernando Ortiz Crespo, Ecuadorian scientist.

Fundación Nahuel supports various institutions in integral health, food security, psychology, education and environmental projects. It works in institutional cooperation agreements with municipalities, parish councils, health institutions, educational institutions, universities, grassroots social organizations and civil organizations.

In order to achieve its objectives, the Nahuel Foundation maintains a program called “Healthy Schools”, which aims to provide comprehensive support to underprivileged sectors of the population. The components of this program are:

  • Infrastructure: School buildings.
  • Improving the quality of education: educational scholarships, school equipment and furnishings, training for school authorities and teachers in compliance with the school curriculum.
  • Health: support for primary health care, disease and disability prevention, first aid training, school first aid kit management, and training of health and nutrition promoters.
  • Food safety: training in hygiene, food handling, preparation and preservation, nutrition, school gardens and small animal husbandry.
  • Environment: Environmental education and support for environmental conservation projects.

Project results:

The Nahuel Foundation considers that the publication of this book will be a great contribution to the education of Ecuadorian children and youth, since Fernando Ortiz was one of the most important scientific references in the country and mentor -from the university classrooms- of many of the current Ecuadorian professionals in this field.
